What wpDiscuz does well
wpDiscuz, by gVectors, has been in the WordPress plugin directory since 2014. As of October 2026 it has 60,000+ active installs and 4.7 out of 5 stars from 581 ratings, 514 of them five stars.
The free core is generous: AJAX and live comments, threaded replies, comment voting and rating, post ratings, inline comments on post content, subscriptions, custom comment forms, social login, WooCommerce reviews, lazy loading, built-in caching and three layouts. The vendor says there is no paid pro version of the core plugin.
Comments stay in the native wp_comments and wp_commentmeta tables, and uninstalling wpDiscuz doesn't remove them. That makes it easy to leave.
Why people look for a wpDiscuz alternative
Most reviews are positive. The critical minority, plus the vendor's own docs, point to five trade-offs:
- Paid add-ons: extras cost $15 to $49 each (Report and Flagging, Media Uploader and Frontend Moderation are $29), or $120 for a 17-add-on bundle and $190 for all of them.
- Setup and feature creep: a January 2026 two-star review called setup "a nightmare", and an August 2025 three-star review said "even the basic stuff is confusing."
- Updates and caching: the vendor asks you to clear cache plugin and CDN caches after every install or update. A September 2026 one-star review called the update frequency "ridiculous", given the cache purges each update needs, and older reviews from 2020 to 2022 mention cache conflicts and slower pages.
- Extra tables: wpDiscuz adds 6 database tables of its own for votes, ratings, subscriptions, follows, forms and phrases, and some add-ons add more.
- Antispam Bee: its FAQ says it isn't compatible with wpDiscuz. wpDiscuz points to its built-in anti-spam features, Akismet and CAPTCHA instead.

How to switch from wpDiscuz without losing comments
- Back up your database, including wpDiscuz's own tables, so you can roll back.
- Know what stays behind. Comments and replies live in wp_comments and carry over. Votes, ratings, follows and subscriptions sit in wpDiscuz's tables and won't show up elsewhere.
- Deactivate wpDiscuz. Your comments stay in WordPress, ready for native comments or Thrive Comments to display.
- Import if you go hosted. WordPress comment import is on CommentCamp's roadmap. Today, Disqus imports WordPress comments during setup and Hyvor Talk has an import tool; on Disqus, set up sync back to WordPress.
- Clear your cache plugin and CDN caches so readers see the new comment form.
Tip: Staying on native comments? Check threading depth and link moderation in your WordPress comment settings.

Frequently asked questions
Is wpDiscuz really free?
Yes. The core plugin is free, and the vendor says there is no paid pro version. Extra features are paid add-ons at $15 to $49 each, or $120 for a bundle of 17 and $190 for all of them, both with unlimited-site licenses.
Will I lose my comments if I uninstall wpDiscuz?
No. wpDiscuz stores comments in the native wp_comments and wp_commentmeta tables, and the vendor says uninstalling it does not remove existing comments. Votes, ratings, follows and comment subscriptions live in its own tables, so they won't appear in a new comment system.
Does wpDiscuz work with caching plugins?
Yes, but the vendor asks you to clear cache plugin and CDN caches after installing or updating wpDiscuz so the latest assets load. It says performance depends on traffic, comment volume, hosting, caching and enabled features. Some reviews mention cache conflicts and frequent updates.
Does Antispam Bee work with wpDiscuz?
No. Antispam Bee's FAQ says it is not compatible with wpDiscuz. wpDiscuz says it includes built-in anti-spam features and can be used alongside Akismet and compatible CAPTCHA solutions, so use one of those instead.
What is the best free alternative to wpDiscuz?
CommentCamp is $0 for site owners with no ads, plus built-in spam filtering, member levels and Q&A; it's in private early access, so site owners join the waitlist for an invite. Native WordPress comments with a spam filter are the simplest free option today, and Jetpack Comments is free if you run Jetpack. Disqus Basic is free only with ads.
