CommentCamp

It's in private early access, with invites going out by email as rollout expands.

  • Price: $0 for site owners, free forever; funded by optional reader Pro upgrades, not ads
  • Active installs: not listed yet, in early access
  • Best for: publishers who want comments plus community features; join the waitlist

Disclosure: CommentCamp is our product.

wpDiscuz

wpDiscuz, made by gVectors and in the plugin directory since 2014, replaces the default comment area with AJAX live comments, voting, post ratings, inline comments, social login and three layouts. Comments stay in the native WordPress comment tables; the plugin adds its own tables for votes, ratings, subscriptions, follows and forms.

  • Price: free; add-ons cost $15 to $49 each, or $120 for a bundle of 17 on unlimited sites
  • Active installs: 60,000+ (4.7 stars from 581 ratings)
  • Best for: feature-rich comments that stay in your own database

Thrive Comments

Thrive Comments is a premium plugin with badges, up-votes and down-votes, featured comments, and an action after each comment such as a redirect, a share request or similar posts. It builds on native WordPress comments, and Thrive says your comments stay on your site if you remove it.

  • Price: $49 the first year, then $99 per year for 1 site; also in Thrive Suite ($299 the first year)
  • Active installs: not listed; it's sold only through Thrive Themes
  • Best for: gamified comments and post-comment calls to action

Jetpack Comments

Jetpack Comments is a free, off-by-default feature of Automattic's Jetpack plugin. It replaces your theme's form with one loaded from jetpack.wordpress.com, where readers log in with WordPress.com or Facebook or comment as guests. Comments are saved to your WordPress database and synced to WordPress.com.

  • Price: free with Jetpack
  • Active installs: 3+ million (the whole Jetpack plugin)
  • Best for: sites that already run Jetpack

Disqus

Disqus hosts your comments on its own servers. The free Basic plan is ad-supported and limited to sites that meet its ad-network eligibility rules, and syncing comments back into WordPress is off until you set it up.

  • Price: free with ads; Plus is $12 per month or $132 per year for up to 100,000 monthly pageviews; Pro starts at $115 per month
  • Active installs: 30,000+ (2.7 stars from 219 ratings)
  • Best for: hosted comments, with ads or a monthly fee

Hyvor Talk

Hyvor Talk is a paid, privacy-focused hosted system with no ads or tracking scripts in the embed and data on servers in Germany. Imported WordPress and Disqus comments then live on Hyvor's servers.

  • Price: from EUR 5 per month, billed annually at EUR 50 (1 site, 2,500 credits per month); 14-day trial, no free plan
  • Active installs: 90+ for the WordPress plugin
  • Best for: privacy-minded sites willing to pay

Akismet Anti-spam

Akismet isn't a comment system. It's Automattic's spam filter for native comments and contact forms, and it needs an Akismet.com API key.

  • Price: pay what you want for non-commercial sites; Pro is $9.95 per month billed yearly (1 site, 500 spam checks per month)
  • Active installs: 5+ million (4.7 stars from 1,187 ratings)
  • Best for: commercial sites and contact forms

Antispam Bee

Antispam Bee filters native comments and trackbacks without captchas and, per its description, without sending personal data to third-party services. It's free for personal and commercial sites, with no site limit.

  • Price: free
  • Active installs: 700,000+ (4.8 stars from 226 ratings)
  • Best for: native comments on a zero budget

Note: Antispam Bee's FAQ says it is not compatible with Jetpack, wpDiscuz or Disqus comments, and it doesn't protect contact forms.

What native WordPress comments already do

WordPress core (version 7.1.4) gives you a free comment system, stored in your own database in the wp_comments table. Threaded replies are on by default at 5 levels deep, adjustable up to 10.

By default, WordPress holds any comment with 2 or more links for moderation and rejects a second comment from the same person within 15 seconds. There's no voting, social login or spam service. Our WordPress comment settings guide covers every option.

How to choose a comment plugin

  • Engagement: CommentCamp adds member levels, quests and optional Q&A for $0; wpDiscuz adds voting and inline comments for $0; Thrive Comments adds badges and post-comment actions for $49 the first year.
  • Spam: CommentCamp filters spam automatically, so it needs no extra plugin. Native comments need a filter, and Antispam Bee doesn't work with wpDiscuz, Jetpack Comments or Disqus. See WordPress anti-spam plugins.
  • Cost over time: CommentCamp is $0 for site owners. Thrive renews at $99 per year, Disqus Plus costs $132 per year without ads, and Hyvor Talk starts at EUR 50 per year.
  • Data ownership: native comments, wpDiscuz, Thrive Comments and Jetpack Comments keep comments in your WordPress database. Disqus and Hyvor Talk keep them on their own servers.

Keep your comments portable

Pick a system you can leave. Hosted systems need an exit plan. Disqus imports your WordPress comments, lets you export any time and can sync comments back into WordPress once you set that up. Hyvor Talk imports WordPress and Disqus comments as guest comments but documents no sync back.

CommentCamp's core roadmap follows the same idea: WordPress comment import, full data exports and an optional local mirror that copies comments back into WordPress. Join the early-access waitlist for an invite.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free comment plugin for WordPress?

CommentCamp, for comments plus community features at $0: it launches with an official WordPress plugin, built-in spam filtering and no ads, and it's in private early access with a waitlist. wpDiscuz is also free, with live comments, voting and social login, and keeps comments in your own database. For plain native comments, add Antispam Bee, which is free and has 700,000+ active installs.

Do I need a comment plugin for WordPress?

No. WordPress comments work out of the box with threaded replies 5 levels deep, link-based moderation and flood protection. Most sites only need a spam filter such as Akismet or Antispam Bee. Add a plugin when you want voting, social login, badges or hosted comments.

Will I lose my comments if I uninstall wpDiscuz or Thrive Comments?

No. Both build on native WordPress comments, and both vendors say existing comments stay on your site after removal. Extras such as votes and badges don't carry over, so back up your database first.

Is Disqus still free for WordPress?

Only with ads. Disqus Basic is free and ad-supported for sites that meet its ad-network eligibility rules. Without ads, Disqus Plus costs $12 per month or $132 per year for up to 100,000 monthly pageviews.

How do I get CommentCamp for WordPress?

Join the waitlist. CommentCamp is free for site owners and will launch with an official WordPress plugin and a universal embed script. It's in private early access, and invites go out by email as rollout expands.
