What "free" means on a community platform

"Free" can mean three different things: a permanent $0 plan someone else hosts, a 14-day trial that turns into a monthly bill, or open-source software that costs nothing while you pay for the server.

Most creator platforms that show up for "free community platform" are the second kind. Prices below are in USD as of October 2026; for paid picks, see the best online community platforms.

6 community platforms you can run for free

CommentCamp

CommentCamp gives independent publishers, bloggers and WordPress sites free comments and community spaces on their own website, with no ads. It launches with an official WordPress plugin and a universal embed script and is in private early access with a waitlist.

Disclosure: CommentCamp is our product.

  • Free limits: $0 for site owners, free forever, with unlimited comments, replies and threads, spam filtering and a moderation queue
  • What costs money: nothing for owners or readers; it's funded by optional member Pro (cosmetic profile badges, theme customization, eligible XP boosts), not ads
  • Best for: sites that want discussion, member levels and Q&A on their own pages; built for free communities, not paid memberships

Discord

Discord servers are free to create and run, with text, voice and live streaming built in, inside Discord's app rather than on your domain.

  • Free limits: up to 25 million members per server; 25 people on video in a voice channel, 50 viewers on Go Live, 10,000 in a Stage channel; members must be 13 or older
  • What costs money: nothing for the server; members can buy Nitro Basic for $2.99/month, and Discord keeps 10% of Server Subscription and Server Shop sales (US creators only)
  • Best for: gaming, hobby and creator groups that want live chat and voice

Facebook Groups

Facebook Groups are free to create and run, and they sit where many people already have an account.

  • Free limits: no custom domain; a Facebook account is required to join
  • What costs money: nothing to run a group
  • Best for: local clubs and hobby groups whose members already use Facebook

Telegram

Telegram is a free messaging app with group chats and 1-way broadcast channels, running in Telegram's own apps.

  • Free limits: up to 200,000 members per group; unlimited channel subscribers
  • What costs money: nothing for owners; Telegram Premium is optional for individual users, priced by country
  • Best for: mobile-first groups and creators who want chat plus a broadcast channel

Discourse Free (hosted)

Discourse launched its hosted Free plan on July 14, 2026: a "free forever" forum with no credit card required. It's built for threaded, searchable discussion on a free yourname.discourse.group address.

  • Free limits: unlimited members and chat, 2 staff seats, 10 categories, 5GB storage, 500k page views and 20k emails a month; no custom domain
  • What costs money: Pro at $100/month adds a custom domain, 5 staff seats and 15+ plugins; Business is $500/month
  • Best for: searchable forums without running a server; see how to create a free forum

Discourse self-hosted

The open-source Discourse software is free under GPL v2 or later and runs on your own server and domain. The official minimum is a 64-bit Linux server with 1GB RAM, 1 CPU core and 10GB disk (2GB RAM, 2 cores and 20GB recommended).

  • Free limits: no plan caps; your server sets the limits
  • What costs money: hosting, for example $6/month for a 1GB DigitalOcean droplet or $12/month for 2GB
  • Best for: technical owners who want full control

"Free" platforms that are really 14-day trials

Plenty of people searching for a free community platform want a free Skool alternative. On Skool you can make your group free for members, but you still pay for the plan once the 14-day trial ends: Hobby is $9/month (plus 10% + 30 cents per paid transaction) and Pro is $99/month.

The other big creator platforms have no $0 tier either:

  • Circle: from $89/month billed annually ($99 monthly) after a 14-day trial, with a 2% transaction fee on Professional
  • Mighty Networks: Explore from $29/month billed annually ($35 monthly) with a 5% fee; the 14-day trial is of the Growth plan
  • Heartbeat: from $40/month billed annually ($49 monthly) for up to 350 members after a 14-day trial
  • Bettermode: retired its free plan in January 2026 and removed free communities by March 15, 2026; now from $149/month billed yearly
  • Geneva: once a free group app where hosts kept 95% of payments; Bumble acquired it in 2024, so it's no longer an option

Note: On Heartbeat, communities that aren't upgraded after the trial are deactivated, and inactive ones are deleted after 30 days.

The hidden costs of "free"

$0 up front doesn't mean $0 forever. Three costs tend to show up later.

Transaction fees. If you charge members, the platform takes a cut: 10% on Discord's paid server features and on Skool Hobby (plus 30 cents per charge), 5% on Mighty Networks Explore and Heartbeat Build. Stripe adds 2.9% + 30 cents per standard US card charge where you use your own account.

Branded mobile apps. An app with your own brand costs real money: Mighty Pro starts at $17,000/year, Heartbeat requires Scale at $849/month, and Circle requires Circle Plus at a custom price.

Data ownership. CommentCamp has full data exports and an optional local comment mirror on its core roadmap. Discord and Facebook only let you export your own activity, not the whole community, while Telegram Desktop exports chat history and self-hosted Discourse makes full backups including uploads.

Tip: Before you invite anyone, check whether you can export the whole community's posts and member list. If you can't, switching platforms later means starting over.

How to choose a free option

  • A blog or website you already run: CommentCamp keeps the conversation on your own pages for $0, and we never gate conversations behind paywalls or sell your data. Join the early-access waitlist.
  • Live chat and voice: Discord, or Telegram for a large mobile group or broadcast channel
  • Members who already live on Facebook: Facebook Groups
  • Searchable long-form topics: Discourse Free, or self-hosted Discourse for $6 to $12/month if you want your own domain

Frequently asked questions

What is the best completely free community platform?

CommentCamp is the best free pick for your own website: no ads, and in private early access. For chat, Discord and Telegram are the strongest free options, Facebook Groups suits members who already use Facebook, and Discourse's Free plan gives you a $0 hosted forum.

Is Skool free to create a community?

No. You can make your Skool group free for members to join, but you pay for a plan once the 14-day free trial ends: Hobby costs $9 a month plus 10% and 30 cents per paid transaction, and Pro costs $99 a month.

Is Discourse free or paid?

Both. Discourse launched a hosted Free plan on July 14, 2026 with unlimited members, 2 staff seats and 5GB of storage. Hosted Pro costs $100 a month and adds a custom domain, or you can self-host the open-source software on a server from about $6 a month.

Can you export your community from Discord or Facebook Groups?

Not the whole community. Discord's data package only includes messages you sent yourself, not a server archive, and Meta's export tool covers your own profile's information. We found no official way to export a whole Facebook Group's posts or member list.

How can I add a free community to my WordPress site?

Use CommentCamp, which is free forever for site owners and launches with an official WordPress plugin and a universal embed script. It's in private early access with a waitlist. You can also add a forum plugin or link to a free hosted forum like Discourse Free.
