5 ways to create a free forum
A "free forum" usually means one of two things: a hosted service that shows ads, or free software you run on cheap hosting. Here's how the five main routes compare, with prices as of October 2026.
| Route | Cost | Setup time | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community spaces with CommentCamp | $0 for site owners | Plugin or embed (invite) | High |
| Hosted forum service | Free with ads; ProBoards ad-free from $6.00/month | Under a minute | Low |
| Forum software on your own hosting | Free software; server from $6/month | About 10 minutes (Discourse installer) | Full |
| WordPress plus a forum plugin | Free plugin on your WordPress hosting | Minutes | High |
| Discord or Reddit | $0 | Minutes | Low |
Option 1: community spaces on your own site
If you run a blog or publication, a separate forum can sit empty while readers stay on your articles. That's why we made CommentCamp: free comments and community spaces embedded on your own website, with unlimited threads, spam filtering, a moderation queue, member levels and optional Q&A with accepted answers. Article comments and community threads share replies, member profiles and notifications.
It's $0 for site owners and readers never pay; it's funded by optional member Pro upgrades, not ads. It launches with a WordPress plugin and a universal embed script, is built for threaded discussion on your own pages and is in private early access: join the early-access waitlist.
Option 2: a free hosted forum service
A hosted service is the fastest route if you don't want to touch servers or code. You sign up, pick a name and the forum is live.
ProBoards says you can "Create a Free Forum! It's free and takes less than 30 seconds." There's no limit on categories, boards, members, threads or posts, and you get 200 MB of attachment space. The catch is two banner ads on every user-facing page; going ad-free costs $6.00/month as a recurring subscription or $8.00 month to month, for up to 50,000 ad-free pageviews.
Forumotion still offers free hosted forums in 2026. Its free forums carry ads, and ad removal, domain names and extra packages are paid add-ons bought with credits; it publishes no simple price list.
Option 3: free forum software on cheap hosting
Running your own software gives you full ownership of your database and domain, with no one else's ads. The software is free, so you only pay for hosting. Compare the main engines in our guide to the best forum software.
- phpBB: free and open source (GPL v2). It runs on PHP 7.2+ with MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL or SQLite, so ordinary PHP web hosting works. The latest version is 3.3.19 (Sep 24, 2026).
- Flarum: free (MIT), with version 2.0 released on Oct 9, 2026. It needs PHP 8.3+ and command-line access to install it with Composer.
- Discourse: free and open source (GPL v2). It runs in Docker on a Linux server with at least 1 GB of RAM, 1 CPU core and 10 GB of disk (2 GB+ RAM recommended).
The official Discourse installer promises you can "Set up Discourse in about 10 minutes", with free subdomains like yoursite.discourse.diy and optional email setup. A DigitalOcean droplet with 1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU and 25 GiB SSD costs $6.00/month.
Tip: Want Discourse without a server? Its hosted Free plan includes 2 staff seats, unlimited members and 500k monthly page views, with "no server to manage and no cost to get started."
Option 4: WordPress plus a forum plugin
If you already run a WordPress site, you can install a free forum plugin from your dashboard. We compare the options in our guide to WordPress forum plugins.
- bbPress: free, 100,000+ active installs, current version 2.6.21 (last updated Oct 27, 2026). Requires WordPress 6.0+ and PHP 7.2+.
- wpForo: free core with paid add-ons, 20,000+ active installs, current version 3.2.2 (last updated Sep 28, 2026). Requires WordPress 5.2+ and PHP 7.1+.
Option 5: Discord or Reddit instead of a forum
Starting where people already have accounts is a quick way to test an idea. Neither gives you a website you own; see our roundup of free community platforms for more options.
Creating a Discord server is free, and conversations happen as real-time chat inside the app. Good answers scroll away quickly, and the discussion lives in the app rather than on public web pages.
Creating a Reddit community is free too, and you get threaded discussions. Choose the name carefully: it must be 3 to 21 characters and can't be changed later, including capitalization.
How to launch and seed your first discussions
Installing forum software takes minutes. Getting strangers to talk is the hard part, because nobody wants to post first in an empty room.
- Pick a narrow topic and name. A forum for owners of one specific model has a clearer reason to exist than a forum about "cars".
- Start with a few categories. Three or four broad boards keep early activity visible; split them when traffic grows.
- Write short rules. A few bullet points on behavior and spam are enough. Start from our community guidelines template.
- Post starter threads before inviting anyone. Add a welcome thread, a few real questions and a useful resource, so visitors have something to reply to.
- Invite a small first group. Skip the big launch; ask a handful of friends, readers or regulars to reply to your starter threads.
- Reply fast in the first weeks. Answer new posts the same day and ask a follow-up question so the place feels alive.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a forum website for free?
If you already run a website, CommentCamp adds community spaces to it for $0 and is in private early access. The fastest standalone option is a free hosted service like ProBoards, which says setup takes less than 30 seconds and shows two banner ads on every page, or Discourse's free hosted plan. On WordPress, a free plugin like bbPress or wpForo also works.
Is there free forum hosting without ads?
Yes. CommentCamp is $0 for site owners with no ads, funded by optional member Pro, and is in private early access. Free hosts like ProBoards and Forumotion show ads, and ProBoards charges $6.00/month to remove them; for no ads on your own server, run free software like phpBB or Discourse from $6/month.
How much does it cost to run a forum?
It can cost $0 with CommentCamp on your own site, on ad-supported hosts like ProBoards or Forumotion, or on Discourse's free hosted plan. Removing ProBoards ads costs $6.00/month recurring or $8.00 month to month. Self-hosting free software on a DigitalOcean server costs $6.00/month for 1 GiB of RAM or $12.00/month for 2 GiB.
What is the easiest way to start a forum?
If you have a website, CommentCamp adds free community spaces to it through a WordPress plugin or embed script, with no server to manage; it's in private early access. Otherwise a hosted service is easiest: ProBoards says a free forum takes less than 30 seconds to create, with no limit on boards or members, and a free Discord server or Reddit community takes minutes.
Should I use a forum or Discord for my community?
If you run a website, CommentCamp gives you free threaded community spaces on it and is in private early access. Use Discord if your members want real-time chat in an app they already use. Use a forum if you want organized, threaded discussions that are easy to find later and live on your own domain; a self-hosted forum needs a cheap server.
