Why people leave Disqus

Ads on the free plan. Disqus Basic is "Free, ads-supported with a Top ads placement required," and pages with 4 or more top-level comments can also get in-thread ads. Going ad-free takes Plus, from $12/month or $11/month billed yearly; our guide to what Disqus is and how its pricing works covers every tier.

Data sharing. The privacy policy says "Disqus is also a marketing and data company" and that in the past 12 months it sold or shared all listed categories of personal data with Zeta Global, its owner since 2017, and business partners.

A privacy and security record. In May 2021, Norway's data protection authority announced a planned NOK 25 million fine over tracking without a legal basis; its 2024 final decision was a reprimand for sharing data with Zeta Global without valid consent from July 2018 to December 2019. In October 2017, Disqus also disclosed that a 2012 database snapshot exposed emails and usernames for 17.5 million users.

Export limits. Disqus exports arrive as emailed XML files, "designed for backup purposes only," and "Exports may not be available for all sites, particularly those of a large size."

How to move your comments off Disqus

  1. Export. In Disqus Admin, go to Community > Export and click "Export." The XML file is queued and emailed to your account address.
  2. Sync to WordPress, if you use it. The Disqus plugin "automatically syncs comments back to WordPress," but "Syncing is not enabled by default." Synced comments stay in WordPress after you remove Disqus, so wpDiscuz, native comments and tools with a WordPress importer can use them.
  3. Import. Off WordPress, upload the XML to a tool with a Disqus importer: Hyvor Talk, FastComments, Remark42, Comentario or Isso.
  4. Keep URLs stable. Disqus ties each thread to a page with this.page.url and this.page.identifier, so changing permalinks mid-move can orphan threads.
  5. Swap the embed. Remove the Disqus plugin or embed code, then add the new tool's script or plugin.

Tip: Keep Disqus installed until the XML file is in your inbox or WordPress has synced; large sites may not get an export at all.

Leave Disqus for free

CommentCamp gives publishers comments with no ads, data sharing or pageview fees, at $0 for site owners. It's in private early access: join the waitlist for an invite.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Disqus show ads on my site?

On the free Disqus Basic plan, ads are required and the top ad placement above the comments is mandatory. Pages with 4 or more top-level comments can also show in-thread ads. Disqus's privacy policy says advertising is the predominant way it makes money.

How much does it cost to remove ads from Disqus?

Removing ads takes at least Disqus Plus: $12 a month or $11 a month billed yearly for up to 100,000 monthly pageviews, $20 or $18 for up to 350,000, and $35 or $31 for up to 900,000, on up to 3 sites.

What is the best free Disqus alternative without ads?

CommentCamp is free forever for site owners, with no ads or data sales, in invite-only early access. On WordPress, wpDiscuz is free and keeps comments in your database. GraphComment's hosted plan is free and ad-free up to 1,000,000 data loads a month, giscus is free on GitHub Discussions, and Remark42, Comentario and Isso are free to self-host.

Can I export my comments from Disqus?

Yes. In Disqus Admin, go to Community, then Export, and Disqus emails you an XML file, though it warns that exports may not be available for very large sites. Hyvor Talk, FastComments, Remark42, Comentario and Isso import that file directly.

Does Disqus sell user data?

Its privacy policy, updated July 10, 2026, calls Disqus a marketing and data company that uses personal data for cross-context behavioral advertising. It says that in the past 12 months it sold or shared all listed categories of personal data with Zeta Global and its business partners.
