CommentCamp: comments and community on your own site
CommentCamp is a hosted, free comments and community layer for independent publishers, bloggers and WordPress sites, launching with an official WordPress plugin and a universal embed script. Article comments and community threads share replies, profiles and notifications, and one reader account works across every CommentCamp site. You get unlimited comments, automated spam filtering and a moderation queue, plus optional accepted answers (Q&A), reactions, member levels, quests and custom styling.
It's $0 for site owners, funded by optional member Pro instead of ads, and WordPress comment import, full exports and an optional local comment mirror are on the roadmap. CommentCamp is in private early access, onboarding the first cohorts of sites; join the waitlist. Disclosure: CommentCamp is our product.
BuddyPress: the free foundation
BuddyPress has been on wordpress.org since 2009 and describes itself as "a suite of components that are common to a typical social network." It's free under the GPL, has 90,000+ active installs, and was last updated on October 23, 2026 (version 14.5.4).
You can switch on 8 components: Activity Streams with threaded comments and @mentions, Extended Profiles, User Settings, Extensible Groups (public, private or hidden), Friend Connections, Private Messaging, Site Tracking and Notifications. For forums, BuddyPress points to bbPress, which plugs into groups, profiles and notifications.
Tip: If an older theme or plugin broke after BuddyPress 12.0, the official BP Classic add-on (6,000+ active installs) restores the legacy URL parser, the BP Default theme and legacy widgets.
BuddyBoss: a BuddyPress fork with paid plans
BuddyBoss launched its free, open-source BuddyBoss Platform in mid-2019 as a fork of BuddyPress, with forums merged in from bbPress. It's licensed under GPL v3 and isn't listed on wordpress.org.
Paid web plans cover one production site each, with list prices of $199 (Start), $399 (Launch) and $699 (Scale) a year; the pricing page shows first-year discounts, and extra site licenses cost $99. Launch adds the BuddyBoss Theme, LMS integrations, messaging, notifications and access controls, while Scale adds gamification, media offload, member blogging and domain restrictions.
A native mobile app is a separate subscription, starting at $99 a month or $999 a year, and hosting isn't included in any plan.
PeepSo: a Facebook-style feed
PeepSo's free core promises "a working social network on your own WordPress site. Not a trial, no time limit, no credit card." It includes profiles, an activity stream, public and private groups, friends, a member directory, photos and media, and real-time chat, with a "Powered by PeepSo" credit on the front end.
The free core now downloads from peepso.com, since the wordpress.org listing was closed at the author's request on November 19, 2024. The Community bundle costs $149 a year for 1 site ($199 for 5, $249 for 10) and adds white labeling, an email digest, social login, file uploads and pages. Ultimate costs $249 a year for 1 site, or $1,999 lifetime, and adds a mobile app lite, stories, achievements, and WooCommerce and LMS integrations.
Ultimate Member: profiles and member directories
Not every community needs a feed. Ultimate Member, with 200,000+ active installs, handles front-end registration, login, user profiles, a drag-and-drop form builder, custom fields, member directories, custom user roles and content restriction. Paid extensions add private messages, groups, followers, friends, social login and WooCommerce.
Note: Update Ultimate Member promptly. Its readme flags 22 releases as security fixes, and the developers said the flaw fixed in version 2.6.7 was known in the wild and let strangers create administrator-level users.
Youzify and wpForo: looks and forums
Youzify (5,000+ active installs, last updated March 2026) requires BuddyPress and gives it a redesigned profile and community interface, with member and group directories, points, badges, verified badges, media, 15+ profile tabs and 22+ profile widgets. Youzify Pro is a one-time purchase on CodeCanyon.
If members want a classic forum rather than a social network, wpForo (20,000+ active installs) has 5 forum layouts including Q&A, with paid add-ons from $15 to $49 or a $290 full bundle. Our WordPress forum plugins guide compares it with bbPress and Asgaros Forum.
Newer plugins are worth a look too: FluentCommunity was added to wordpress.org in November 2024 and already has 8,000+ active installs.
Hosting and performance needs
WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MySQL 8.0 or greater or MariaDB 10.11 or greater, and HTTPS. BuddyPress's own listing asks for at least PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.4.
Caching is the bigger issue. WordPress VIP's docs say "requests from logged-in users will always BYPASS the cache." On a blog, most visitors are logged out and get cached pages; on a community site, members are logged in, so their page views hit PHP and the database. Plan for more CPU, an object cache and better database hosting than a typical blog needs.
Plugin or hosted community embed?
If your community grows out of a blog or publication, a full social network may be more than you need. CommentCamp keeps discussion on the pages readers already visit, with no extra plugins to stack and hosting included. Our guide on how to build an online community covers that decision in more depth.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free WordPress community plugin?
CommentCamp is the best free pick for comments and community spaces on your own site: $0 for site owners, with threads, member levels and optional accepted answers. For a full social network, BuddyPress is the main free plugin, with 90,000+ active installs and 8 components including profiles, groups and activity streams. For registration, profiles and member directories, Ultimate Member's free core has 200,000+ active installs.
What is the difference between BuddyPress and BuddyBoss?
BuddyPress is the original free plugin on wordpress.org. BuddyBoss Platform is a free fork launched in mid-2019 with bbPress forums built in, and BuddyBoss sells paid web plans with list prices of $199 to $699 a year for one site. The Launch and Scale plans add its theme, LMS integrations and more.
Why is PeepSo not on wordpress.org anymore?
PeepSo's wordpress.org listing was closed at the author's request on November 19, 2024, and updates now come from PeepSo's own servers. The free core still downloads from peepso.com, and paid bundles start at $149 a year for one site.
Do community plugins slow down WordPress?
They can. WordPress VIP documentation says requests from logged-in users always bypass the page cache, and community members browse while logged in, so more page views hit PHP and the database. Plan for more CPU, an object cache and solid database hosting.
Is there an alternative to a WordPress social network plugin?
Yes. CommentCamp, our product, adds free comments and community spaces next to your content, hosted for you at $0 for site owners and launching with an official WordPress plugin. It fits discussion around your posts without the feeds and friend lists of a social network. It is in private early access with a waitlist.
