How much does Discourse cost?

Every plan on Discourse's pricing page includes unlimited members, and you can start a free trial of the paid tiers without a credit card. The hosted plans, as of October 2026:

  • Free: $0/month, 2 staff seats (admins and moderators), 500k monthly page views, 20k monthly emails.
  • Pro: $100/month, 5 staff seats, 500k page views, 100k emails.

What self-hosting Discourse really costs

The software is free and open source (GPL v2), built on Ruby on Rails, Ember.js, PostgreSQL and Redis. It installs with Docker, so it doesn't run on ordinary shared PHP hosting.

The official install guide asks for a 64-bit Linux server (Ubuntu LTS recommended) with at least 1 CPU core, 1 GB of RAM with swap and 10 GB of disk. It recommends 2+ cores, 2 GB+ RAM and 20 GB+ disk. On DigitalOcean, a 1 GiB droplet costs $6.00/month and a 2 GiB droplet $12.00/month.

The guide promises you can "Set up Discourse in about 10 minutes", with a free subdomain like yoursite.discourse.diy and optional email (SMTP) setup. The real cost is your time: server updates, rebuilds and backups as Discourse ships new releases, the latest being 2026.10.0 on Oct 27, 2026.

Tip: Discourse's code includes import scripts for phpBB 3, MyBB, XenForo, Vanilla, bbPress, Invision, Flarum and NodeBB, so moving an existing forum to Discourse is usually possible.

Discourse vs Discord

Discord is free and built around real-time chat and voice. It's great for hanging out, but messages live inside the app and scroll away fast.

Discourse is built around topics in categories: threaded, searchable discussions that build a lasting archive. It also has built-in chat, and in September 2026 it announced a bundled voice and video plugin, now called Live. If real-time chat is what you need, compare Discord alternatives.
